"Starting from scratch is definitely the biggest thing we’ve had to overcome," says Nsw Aankh Benu, reflecting on his journey to revive Kemetic spirituality. "It’s a hard thing to do, especially when you’ve invested so much time, energy, and love into something." These words encapsulate the resilience and determination of a man who has dedicated his life to reconnecting the Black family with its Afrikan roots through ancient wisdom and spiritual empowerment.

Aankh Benu, a spiritual teacher, author, and Chief Priest of the Henensu Family and Community, has become a leading voice in the modern revival of Kemetic spirituality. His work, which includes transformative books like The Key to Eden and Remembering Osir, as well as the immersive Khu Khem Kemet Tour, is rooted in the belief that spiritual liberation is the key to personal and collective empowerment.
A Journey of Rediscovery
Growing up in New Orleans, Aankh excelled in academics and athletics but felt a void in understanding his identity and purpose. His introduction to Afrikan spirituality was a turning point. "In our tradition, it is not the God that comes to save you," he explains. "It is you who have come to save the God within you." This profound realization became the foundation of his teachings, emphasizing personal responsibility and spiritual awakening.

Aankh’s journey wasn’t without its struggles. Early in his spiritual path, he faced resistance and betrayal from those who doubted his vision. "They walked away," he recalls. "I was heartbroken, crushed, and contemplated quitting." But instead of giving up, Aankh leaned into his faith and the wisdom of his ancestors. "I kept going, kept researching, and kept writing," he says.
This journey of rediscovery aligns with the principles of Ma’at, the Kemetic concept of truth, balance, and order. As one article on Kemetic spirituality explains, "Living in harmony with Ma’at is at the core of Kemetic spirituality, emphasizing the importance of balance in both personal and communal life."

Building a Legacy
One of Aankh’s most significant contributions is his book Remembering Osir, which began as a creative retelling of the Osirian story but evolved into a comprehensive exploration of Kemetic spirituality. "Over time, it grew from a story into an entire exegesis on the tradition," he shares. The book took four years to complete, a process that required immense dedication and resilience.

In addition to his writings, Aankh leads the Khu Khem Kemet Tour, a spiritual pilgrimage through Egypt. The tour immerses participants in the sacred sites and teachings of the Kemetic people, offering a transformative experience. "The ba, our personal portion of intelligence and power, incarnates into the world through the crown of our father’s head," Aankh explains during one of his tours. "This tradition teaches us how to reconnect with that divine essence."
The importance of reconnecting with Afrikan traditions is echoed in the broader Kemetic community. According to Kemetic Orthodoxy, "The Ankh, a Kemetic symbol of eternal life, continues to hold relevance in modern times, symbolizing the connection between the spiritual and physical realms."

Empowering the Black Family
Aankh’s work is deeply rooted in the empowerment of the Black family. He believes that reconnecting with Afrikan heritage is essential for healing and growth. "Everything that happens in this realm is the result of spiritual workings in the spirit realm," he explains. "We understood as Afrikan people that maintaining balance and harmony in this life is critical to our success."
His wife, Meri Netert Skhrrennut Benu, has been a steadfast partner in his journey. "She’s a soldier, just like me," Aankh says with pride. Together, they’ve faced the challenges of building their community and spreading their message. Meri reflects on their shared mission: "A lot of the reward comes from seeing the transformation in others. It’s always been about what’s next, what more can we create together?"
This focus on transformation and empowerment is particularly significant for Black families navigating spiritual spaces. As one article highlights, "For many Black women, spirituality offers a path to healing and self-discovery, helping them navigate the challenges of modern life while reconnecting with their roots."
Overcoming Challenges
The road hasn’t been easy. Aankh and Meri have had to rebuild their community multiple times, often starting from scratch. "Stopping and literally crying, then starting again that’s been our reality," Aankh admits. But through it all, they’ve remained committed to their purpose.
Their resilience is a testament to the power of faith and determination. "There’s a divine being locked away within you," Aankh says. "It’s your responsibility to liberate and resurrect that nTr within you."
A Vision for the Future
Today, Aankh’s work continues to inspire countless individuals. His teachings emphasize the importance of self-discovery and the reclamation of Afrikan identity. "Until we reconnect with our divine essence, our people will never rise to the position of prominence we once held," he says.
